Debunking Myths about Root Canals

Published on October 24, 2017 by

If you are preparing for a root canal but aren’t familiar with how it’s performed, it’s easy to be nervous about it. There are many counterfeit rumors about them. Here are a few myths and their corresponding truths:

Myth: Root canals are painful.

Truth: Root canals were actually invented to eliminate pain created by infected tissue inside the tooth. Decades ago, the procedure likely did hurt, but today there are anesthetics and advanced technology that ensure that a root canal is about as uncomfortable as a dental filling.

Myth: It’s better to have an extraction.

Truth: Rescuing a natural tooth is always the best option, and that is exactly what root canals do. Moreover, root canals have a high success rate and usually last an entire lifetime. Extractions, however, require additional procedures, like bridgework, dental implants or dentures as tooth replacements, and even dental work to nearby teeth.

Myth: Root canals lead to illness.

Truth: There is no scientific evidence between root canals and other diseases. This myth has its roots in badly designed research from almost a century ago which has been debunked.
